I recently purchased a Dell Dimension (350MHz, 96 MB), but was not smart enough to
check if the video card was integrated into the mother board. I had trouble
installing JFW 3.2 because of an ATI Rage Pro card, but HJ provided me with a new
driver file that got me past the install problems.
I am only beginning to understand, based on some recent list subjects, that
getting JFW installed is not necessarily the final battle. It seems that my 1.5 year
old win95 system at work is more friendly than the brand new win98 system at home.
Are we the only segment of the computer culture that takes a step or two back when
technology takes a step forward...?
How does one know if the "conflict of the day" is caused by the video card, the
sound card, the operating system, the application, or JFW? I guess the right answer
is "all of the above", or some indeterminable combination thereof. Is there some
irrefutable behavior that points to the video card? There was some mention in a
recent message that it was possible to disable an integrated sound card, and reinstall
an independent card. Is this possible with integrated video cards?
For what its worth, the Yamaha 64 sound card in my Dell permits Eloquence speech
and computer sounds simultaneously. I don't know about Real Audio though, because I
have never used it. Also, I will send the ATI driver file if you write to me
privately.
