Hi.
I hope this is not too farr off topic. Hopefully, some of you can help a
"low tech" person like me solve the mysteries of Windows.
I have an "Arkenclone" computer at home. It has a Pentium processor. I have
sixteen meg of Ram. I am running JFW 3.2 with Text Assist as my default
synthesizer.
I have tried several times to download and install IE 4.01Sp with no
success. It probably relates to my lack of memory. Anyway, I tried again
recently. The download went OK as far as I know and setup began. Somewhere
in the process, Setup hung up. I rebooted, but setup apparently didn't
finish. I assume that the update to the start menu shortcuts didn't occur,
but I am not certain of this.
Because I had the "Run JAWS first" option checked, JAWS still ran, although
not with sound. I have an Alva Braille display, so I could still tell JAWs
was running. The Start menu seems to be intact. I can go to "rograms" but
when I try to run anything, I get an error message. I had a sighted friend
look at the message, and it said something about a fatal exception. (Don't
you love Microsoft's choice of words?)
I thought there might be a problem with JFW, so I unchecked the "Run JAWS
first" option and rebooted. I can go to the "Run" dialog, but when I type
in the path name for JAWS, it won't run.
The wierd thing is that I can run my shortcut to my Internet service
provider. That's the only thing that I can run from the start menu.
By the way, I am running Windows 95. I've had some problems in the past,
and Windows has periodically been unstable. The best thing may be to
reinstall Windowsz, but I don't look forward to attempting this.
If I do have to reinstall, where would I find the required product ID
number. Is it on the CD?
Please forgive the length of this post. Any suggestions before I look for a
repairman? Thanks.
