I've been using a DEC Express for several years now, and I have just about
given up on it actually working inside of a DOS window.  However, the
Eliqquence synthesizer works very well within a DOS window, as I would
assume any other sound card-based software synth would do.

It may be easier to switch to a software synth just before running a
dos-based application.
