Hello listers. Since stephen raised an interesting point about using JFW as your dos
screen reader to read messages
when Mcafee or Norton locks the system I decided to run a test. I disabled my dos
screen reader and enabled JFW. I
dropped to a dos box to make sure it was speaking properly and it was. then I
disabled my Anhtiviral Toolkit Pro
background scanner and enabled Norton 5.0's autoprotect feature. Then I made a test
file out of the EICAR dummy
virus that I was telling you all about. Then I opened my email program and proceeded
to attach this file to an email
message. Norton's autoprotect kicked in and sounded the alarm in my pc speaker and
even though I now had JFW
speaking in dos boxes all speech immediately stopped. To clarify when autoprotect
finds a virus the message is not
displayed in a suddenly opened dosbox. rather it is just a dos message box that
displays because the whole system is
locked up including JFW. Hence changing JFW to be your dos screen reader does not
solve the problem I outlined
earlier. It's funny that both Norton and Mcafee claim that locking your system when a
virus is found by the background
scanner is the only safe thing to do when both Antiviral Toolkit Pro and F-prot's
background scanners do not need to do
this in order to control the situation.
