When I tested MCAfee Virus Scan 4.02 with the Iecar test virus I experienced
no locking up what so ever, either while scanning or when it found it in the
back ground.

Hello listers. Since stephen raised an interesting point about using JFW as
your dos screen reader to read messages
when Mcafee or Norton locks the system I decided to run a test. I disabled
my dos screen reader and enabled JFW. I
dropped to a dos box to make sure it was speaking properly and it was. then
I disabled my Anhtiviral Toolkit Pro
background scanner and enabled Norton 5.0's autoprotect feature. Then I
made a test file out of the EICAR dummy
virus that I was telling you all about. Then I opened my email program and
proceeded to attach this file to an email
message. Norton's autoprotect kicked in and sounded the alarm in my pc
speaker and even though I now had JFW
speaking in dos boxes all speech immediately stopped. To clarify when
autoprotect finds a virus the message is not
displayed in a suddenly opened dosbox. rather it is just a dos message box
that displays because the whole system is
locked up including JFW. Hence changing JFW to be your dos screen reader
does not solve the problem I outlined
earlier. It's funny that both Norton and Mcafee claim that locking your
system when a virus is found by the background
scanner is the only safe thing to do when both Antiviral Toolkit Pro and
F-prot's background scanners do not need to do
this in order to control the situation.
