Well I have my system (which happens to be a notebook) set up in such a
way that I can help answer some of your questions.
Firstly, I use Dectalk Access 32 which came direct from Artic - that is, it
is not the one tied to JFW. I simply installed it as per the instructions it
came with. When I installed JAWS I said I wanted Access 32 as one of my
synthesisers. It works fine.
In regard to dictionary settings, I don't know. I've had a bit of a look
around and I can't find this feature. That doesn't mean it isn't there. I
usually only use the JFW dictionary anyway.
I also have Keynote Multimedia. I can't tell you much because it only
arrived 3 days ago. However I will tell you why I bought it. I have always
used a Keynote SA and thus like the voice compared to Access 32. Also,
Access 32 is a bit more sluggish. It pauses at the end of lines and the
internation of the voice treats the end of each line as the end of a
sentence and the beginning of each line as the start of a sentence. Yes, it
has 9 voices to choose from but I still haven't come accross anyone that
uses a voice other than Perfect Paul. As far as comparing the two programs,
I don't know which is more memory hungry. I can tell you that on my system
(Toshiba 4015 CDT) the Access 32 creates a heap more problems than Keynote.
With Access running I could have 3 or 4 crashes back to back. I haven't had
one yet with Keynote. It seems to get a better hold of the sound card and
overrides the Windows sounds a bit when there is a competition happening.
But now that I have bagged Access 32 and praised Keynote I must stress that
in my experience a lot of problems are system specific. I know people
running nearly identical systems with adaptive programs on them and the
hassles they experience are so different it isn't funny. If you want some
