I am using Eloquence, and I have found that if the voice is reading a
message when another message comes in, the notification sound doesn't get
played. I assume that's because the sound card is already busy when the
notification signal is sent. For the same reason, I have removed the sound
notifications for some of the pop-up messages because when the signal
sounded, it kept Jaws from reading the message automatically.

if you assigned a sound to mail, it should altert you of new mail
whether
you are in the mail application or another application; the only
requirement
is that the mail application must be running (not closed). The only
way it
could possibly be a jfw issue is if you are using a software
synthesizer and
have not checked the box letting the sound come through the sound
card also
(don't know the exact words for that jfw chekcbox).
