my name is bill cameron author of this mini tutorial.
also co authoring this is the jfw list members.
this tutorial is divided into 2 parts, first is setting up win 98, then a
assortment of goodies for beginners and advance users.
the set up is pretty much step by step so anybody can follow it.

in lesson 1 i assume that you have either the win 98 upgrade
or the full install already on your machine.

in lesson 2 will be some win 98 upgrade tips for people who have not yet
installed win 98.
those who have can skip lesson 2.
so i assume 2 things, your system is new, no applications except maybe office
and outlook express.
some gateways come pre installed with this software.
i also assume you are not haveing any jfw problems,
translation the video card works great with jfw.
while this tutorial is designed for advance users.
see win 95 tutorial to learn how to move around, or use the jfw tapes.
basicly win 95 and 98 are the same.
what is differant we shall cover here.
so even if you are new to computers stay with us,
and these first few lessons will show how i modify win 98 to work with jfw.

so first of all do the following.

hit the win 98 start key

hit letter s for settings.

now hit p c cursor.

now arrow down to active desk top

hit enter on it

turn on p c cursor

arrow down to where it says view as web page

if it says checked hit the enter key to uncheck it.

this is a toggle which when selected turns off active desk top for the entire
system.

note active desk top that you just disabled turns off active desk top for all
of win 98.
beginners do not need to read any more of this message at this time.
experience users can read the rest, but no reason to do these steps, because
active desk top is all ready disabled.
only present this for adding extra info to the end user.

if you did not turn it off their, it is possible to turn it off
one feature at a time under properties by right clicking on the white part of
the desk top..

when a person first comes up in win 98,
and if you are on the desk top with no focus then hitting a right mouse click
on the num lock pad
should bring up the menu where one can select properties sheets.
more than likely the person will have to tab to desk top first
then click the right mouse click on the num lock pad.
in win 98 i noticed that jfw is on the task bar right after boot up
instead of the desk top as in win 95.

after the person hit enter on properties
they will be in a multi page dialogue box
if a person selected web tab.
in this multipage dialogue box.
then tabbing down and hitting space bar to uncheck the feature you want to
disable.
this menu also has the internet explorer channel bar, which one should disable
as well.

warning, do not use this method, their is an easier way for the blind,
i only discuss it so you know about it,
in case some one else goes in and only turns off half the active desk top,
which could result in total confusion about what your system is doing.
the first method i already described should do it all,
so this second method is just a place to check if things are acting strange.
i do want to say that their are other places that a
person can turn on some of the active desk top feature set.
read all the setup messages and you will learn all about it because it is
covered later.
