scott you could not be more wrong about norton utilities.
while i agreed earlier versions of norton for windows did to little to justify
their price, norton 3 does it all, and quite nicely, and i have installed it
on all my systems with success.
while the system integrator is not super friendly, it is after all designed
for sighted people, accessing the components is easy in the menus.
in addition i know of no other product that allowed a user to make repairs in
windows, boot into safe mode and repair the registry, even when windows will
not allow the user to boot into windows.
being able to do all this with speech is great, especially for new users.
this requires a zip drive with norton 3, but norton 4 may be able to do this
with a cd rom.
it depends on whether your system can boot from cd rom.
it also depends on your speech.
in addition the first time i installed norton it fixed 142 errors in my
registry, plus it maid win 95 stable for the first time.
in fact everybody that i know with jfw has had the same experience with it in
win 95.
not to mention all my sighted friends, they marvel at how n u maid their
systems work right for the very first time.
also even more importan they were amazed how running it weekly kept problems
from cropping up again.
now win 98 is a differant story,
first because 98 has similar tools to do all most all of this.
though after testing my 98 system, and also letting my niece test it, i have
come to the conclusion that win 98
registry fix tool never finds anything wrong up their.
so 98 is short in a couple of areas.
i do want to say 98 is far more stable and will not screw up on its own on a
weekly basis like win 95 does.
so that registry fix tool in 98 sucks.
for instance the win 98 system configuration utility is
telling me that i have 7 things in start up, well actually i have 2, but lines
in the registry have it thinking differantly, the registry fix in 98 does not
even delete those opsolete lines in the registry.
so even in 98 the user benefits from norton win doctor which is vastly superior
at fixing such problems.
norton does not just go up their and delete obsolete lines, it tries to fix
them by finding their associated application if it is a short cut for
instance.
also norton studies the registry, for instance if the missing dll message
showes up, norton looks on all the drives includeing the recycle bin to see if
it can find that dll, if it can not then it looks in the registry to see what
application is calling the dll in the first place.
it then tells the user that it can not find the missing dll, gives the path of
the program calling for it, and says do you want to continue searching.
hitting enter will continue the search.
oh the path says netscape is asking for the dll file, so i install the netscape
cd rom and hit enter and presto it is fixed.
so norton does one other thing that most tools in win dows does not do, and
that is make a copy of the c mos settings.
one never knows about the battery.
plus if one gets system works pro one gets every utility they ever need.
like ghost for backing up, a uninstaller and fax program.
i even think it comes with a program that can zip in windows.
formerly sold by quarter deck, zip it.
i have no idea if this zip program is speech friendly.
by the way i have the instructions on the jfw users list server in eudora
format on how to use and do all this.
unfortunately it is for version 3, 4 is out now.
if you have 3 go to nicks jfw users list server sight and tab to faq and hit
enter.
then hit enter when you come to my name.
still those instructions are for version 3,
but they are step by step, with tips for installing, and what to turn off.
scott is right about one thing, one should run as little as possible in
background.
one reason i like norton is that it allows its main component to also do virus
checking.
so people are not running anymore up their in background memory.
i usually disable crash guard in system integrator.
or anyother component i do not use.
these components work good with jfw, but really are only needed for trouble
shooting.
so why cchance running programs in background.
by the way most of this running in background stuff would be less of an issue
if jfw could read the control plus alt plus delete menu
every screen reader can read this but jfw.
at least even out spoken is supposed to, and it is considered to be at the
bottom of the barrel as far as screen readers are concern.
also if a person does decide to use the other components, at least the
components have been tested to work
with other norton stuff, much better than buying components from differant
companies.
