I use a version of Compton's that came out in 1994. I have heard, but
can not confirm, that later versions are much less usable than the one
I have. I used Compton's with the IBM screen reader 2. I've been
trying it with JFW
the past couple of days and find it much more difficult. I found it
impossible to read articles within Compton's. My solution is to select
the entire article, copy it to the
clipboard, and paste it to a friendly program like wordpad. Once in
wordpad
you can read the whole article without ever paging down. I could not
use
ctrl + a to select the article. I had to put the JAWS cursor on the
first
line, lock the left button (insert + /), hit the end key, and unlock
the
left button (same command). At this point I could copy it to the
clipboard.
It's also a good idea to use "active graphics mode" (insert + 4). This
will
give you access to the buttons at the bottom of the screen like
contents. Finding your way around is easier than reading. I either
tab to the list and arrow to the article I want, or tab to
the edit field and type the word i'm looking for. Open articles with
enter,
and close them with ctrl + f4. The only time I use the menus is to do
an
idea search. If a word i want doesn't have an article, the idea search
looks
for any occurance of that word in the whole encyclopedia.
The reason I mention this is that I heard that newer versions don't
have a menu bar.
