Auto-labeling of graphics

Dear Listers,
Has anyone used the auto-labeling of graphics feature successfully?  I have 
tried to no avail.  I have also looked for documentation to discover what I 
might be doing wrong and have found nothing.
Could someone please give me some tips, or point me to the documentation?
