Yes you can. When you are downloading a file, you can do anything else.
Just don't close your browser to be safe. Then just load any other program
like you would. Just check once and a while to see if it is still
downloading as some of the newer browser will download the file and won't
tell you they are done, however a trick is if you hear the hard drive work
for a min, it most often means it is done, unless you are doing something
that is hard drive intense.

P.S. That is where the whole idea of Windows is from. Have more then on
program open at a time.

If I am downloading something, can I do something elase somewhere? For
example, I downloaded realplayer. It took a long time. I saved the file to a
disk. Could I go anywhere on the c drive?
