This may help:
do Start, Programs, Accessories - enter on each.
The m for Multimedia submenu hit Enter again.
You can then up & down arrow & see various CD, Synth, Wave, ...
you need to play around with these, following intuition or something like that.
I think there's a mixer involved & the Synth volume got turned down to 0
somehow.
This happened to me a couple times.
