the answer is as follows.  you can download jaws for dos at:
http://www.hj.com
it must be installed from dos and you first must unpack the archive
and put the resulting directories onto floppy disks.  run the install
from dos and it will not talk but will walk you through the install in
the sense that it asks what drive, directory, synth and keyboard type
you have.  it will also ask what port your synth is on and give
confirmation of your choices before you proceed.  It will not conflict
with jfw unless you have to run real mode drivers like the one that
causes it to be able to support keynote gold sa.  I think the dos
drivers for some other synths will also cause problems, but I have
seen it work quite nicely with jfw using several different synths
among them an accent sa.
