In Windows 95 MS Word using insert+delete on the numpad while in cursor use
will yield the row and column number with a minor exception, a Microsoft bug
on the status line in Office97. I do not know whether Microsoft fixed the
bug in Windows 98 or any other versions.
The bug in Windows95 MS Word Office 97 is this. It turns out that the
status line is actually a keystroke counter instead of giving true cursor
positions when the tab key is used. You will get the correct row, but not
the correct column when the tab key is used.
I reported this bug to Microsoft a long time ago, and they probably fixed it
in the release of Windows 98.
I can't say for sure since I am only using Windows 95 and MS Office 97.
If you are using MS Word you can test it out by pressing the tab key several
times plus one letter key, then check the status line or insert+delete.
