Hi, Marsha here.  Though I do not know the answer to your technical questions,
I have Ruby (or rather my husband has Ruby) and you do not have to put JFW to
sleep when running the program.  You also do not have to use the Viavopice
speech.  You can use your primary speech synthesizer.  Just follow the typical
install prompts and install as it directs.
