Colleagues, myself and many others have experienced some very mysterious
system lockups on a regular bases, programs not running because the system
cannot activate a particular dll file, etc. I was told that it was JFW
causing conflicts. However, I have discovered that most of the time I can
minimize or eliminate the problems by getting rid of two programs that run
in the background and are loaded automatically upon bootup. The first one
I get rid of is the HPBUTTONMGR program which is associated with my HP
scanner. I hope to solve this one shortly by switching to a USB port HP
scanner. The second of these programs I get rid of is the FINDFAST
program. The problem is that if you are using JFW, you have no way of
getting rid of these programs by using JFW to help you. I boot up my
system, and once it is booted up, I immediately hit the alt-ctrl-del key
combination to bring up the list of programs running in the background, and
then, I hit the letter "h" which takes me to the HPBUTTONMGR and then, I
hit the tab key once which puts me on "end task" and hit enter. At that
point, I am back on my desktop or wherever I started. Since I have only
one program in this list that starts with the letter "h," I can get away
with this. If I had more than one program that started with the letter
"h," then, I would have to be careful to not get rid of the wrong one! I
do the same thing to get rid of the FINDFAST program with one exception; I
have to hit the enter key twice, instead of only once, and then, I am back
on the desktop or wherever I started.
So, if someone wants to blame JFW for your lockup problems, like many
technicians want to do, you might test what I just described. Of course,
you may not be using an HP scanner, but you might have some other program
running in the background that is contributing to your lockups.
