Ron,
Do you have windows 98 or 95? IF YOU have 98, there is a JFW friendly
way!
1) go to your run menu.
2) type msconfig and press enter.
3) go to the start-up tab.
4) uncheck the programs that you don't want running.
5) press OK.
Now the programs that you unchecked will be permanently stopped from
running at start-up until you go back in to msconfig and recheck them
again. Hope this helps.

P. S. I believe windows 95 has a similar program, however I'm not sure
about this.
