Thanks David. Just tried changing to punctuation controlled by synthesiser,
but numbers are still spoken digit by digit even when full numbers are
selected. I guess this is one i need to report to HJ as a bug.

this may not make a difference but have you changed how punctuation is
controlled? I find it to work quite well with most if not all synths
if I have it set to be controlled by the synthesizer.
