Dennis, the following may be useful even if you're not running windows 98.
(Edited from a tech notice from HJ about optimizing JFW 3.2 with Windows 98.)

5. Press SHIFT+CTRL+D to open your default file.
6. From the Set Options menu, DOWN ARROW to Synthesizer Options and
select.
7. Tab to the Allow Wave Files with Software Synthesizers check box
and use the SPACEBAR to check the box.
8. Tab to the OK button and press ENTER

Save your file. Press CTRL+S. This will stop the occasional
stuttering heard with software synthesizers on Windows 98, even on
fast machines.
