Hello,
I am the manager of the computer help desk at American University. One of
the university employees is using Jaws for Windows With Access for Speech
version 3.20.09, and she has an Alva Braille Terminal that is a model from
the 300 series.
The person who setup her hardware and software is no longer at the
university, and I am the only person who can help her. I have worked with
screen magnification software in the past, but never anything like Jaws or
a braille terminal. Her system used to work for email when she had a simple
text-based mail account on the mainframe. A few weeks ago, we shut down the
mainframe and switched to Lotus Notes for email. Jaws does not seem to read
Notes, or any of her other Windows applications. In fact, the only program
it seems to work well with is the database she uses. It is called Datatel.
I tried to setup a PINE mail account for her, but the Windows telnet
utility has the same problem as every other Windows application. Jaws will
read the top of the window, and then read the toolbar. It will not read the
contents of the window.
I am sure that it is a configuration issue, and I have read about JFW
scripts for various applications. I know that I need to start with some
basics about how Jaws works, but we do not seem to have a manual.
Can someone recommend a quick start guide or something that will help me
get her system working again quickly? I would like to configure Jaws to
work with Microsoft Word 97, Lotus Notes R5, and Netscape Navigator 4.6. I
also downloaded the DOS based Lynx browser, but it seems that a lot of
people are using Jaws with Netscape and Internet Explorer. Does anyone have
an opinion on which browser is easiest to learn with Jaws?
I will greatly appreciate any help someone can give me. If you recommend
upgrading the software, or using different applications, please let me
know. Tips on configuring Jaws to work with the applications will also
help.
Finally, I would like to find some audio tapes that will help the user
learn how to use her braille terminal in a Windows environment. She does
use the speakers, but she prefers to receive all of her information from
the braille terminal.
