One of the simplest tips has been the Shift + click trick.
I'm really surprised that more people don't use it. It's perfect for large
selections, where one end is far, far away. Instead of dragging the mouse
(which does indeed
create havoc with the screen) or using Shift + arrows, try this:
1. Click where you want the selection to start.
2. Using the scroll bar only, scroll to where you can see the end
point.
3. Hold down Shift and click at the end."
