HI All
The "bug" in relation to the Word status line is not, as far as I
am aware, a bug at all. It is quite deliberate, and has been the
same way in Word through several versions. As far as I know, the
only way to get the cursor position accurately is to use the
ruler, which we can't access. Microsoft's philosophy behind Word
is, and has always been, that it is a wysiwyg word-processor, and
so the user can see exactly where the cursor is, so there is no
need to provide this information explicitly. More generally, the
difference between Word and WordPerfect in regqard to Reveal
Codes also illustrates this philosphy. The Word user, it is said,
does not need to know anything about the underlying RTF codes
(such as italics, indent codes, etc.) because they are obvious
from the screen layout. By conatrast, WordPerfect allows the user
to glimpse its underlying coding through the Reveal Codes
feature. I find that I can get much greater control over and
consistency in formatting using this feature than I can with
Word, although I admit that in part this may be due to my greater
familiarity with WordPerfect than Word.
Back ato the cursor in Word, using the alt+delete command you can
get the pixel co-ordinates of the cursor's current location. With
a bit of practice, you can translate between pixel co-ordinates
and other units of measurement.
