Acrobat Reader 4.0 by itself won't read PDF files; you need the Access
plug-in. It's called accs4.exe, and can be found at the Adobe web site and
other locations. If you have File Ferret on your system, crank it up and
look for accs4.exe. I did, and found probably thirty different places that
had it. Select the location you want and File Ferret will retrieve it for
you. The file ferret and other ferret packages are great little tools and
they're free. But I'm getting off on a tangent.
Once you have accs4.exe, run it and follow the prompts; the installation is
easy. Then, load Acrobat 4.0, go to the File menu, then the Preferences
sub-menu. In there, you'll find an Access option. This brings up a dialog
which controls how Acrobat Reader presents files to you. When you've gone
through it and selected Access View, as well as your preferred reading
order, you're in business. If everything's working properly,
insert-down-arrow will let you do a continuous read, and you can review the
text much as you would in a word processor. Be forewarned, though, that not
all PDF files can be read. Some are impossible to render into text, for
reasons which I won't get into here. Still, the access plug-in has helped
considerably, and there's a lot of stuff out there that I can read which I
previously couldn't read.
