I worked for three years for Continental Airlines making reservations and
selling tickets. I used an Alva braille display. The problem with using
voice is that you are in a hurry and the voice reads you all information
of which you may need just one detail. For example, someone wants to fly
from New York to California on the cheapest ticket possible. The flights
come up with a line telling you how many first class seats are available,
how many first class frequent flier seats, how many full fare (no
restrictions) coach fare, and then five or six other coach groupings plus
a couple of coach frequent flier groupings. You may just want fares
beginning with the letter M. With braille, you can just quickly scan
down the page looking at M seats on each flight. With speech, you would
have to listen to it read each line from beginning to end. And after
every four or so flights, you have to scroll to another screen and start
all over. There was one agent in Texas who was doing it with speech, but
I understood that she was having a really hard time. You could do this
at home on your own on the internet, but it would be extremely difficult
to do it for a living and be fast enough to be efficient and get any kind
of commission.
