To establish a hotkey for jaws be sure to use the correct version number in
choosing jfw as a hot key with the combination of control+alt+j. For
instance do not use the letter "j" for version jfw3.3, if you have already
assigned that letter to jfw version 3.2, etc.. When I update to jfw3.3 I
will probably use the letter "k" for control+alt+k as the hot key for jfw3.3
and keep jfw3.2 available on my system with control+alt+j. Before trying
out the hotkey it would be advisable to disable in the jaws file the run
jaws first option. Once the hotkey has been established you have jaws
available at your command and your finger tips.
Now here it is:
Making a hotkey for jaws:
(1) Go to Start Menu.
(2) Press s for Settings then t for Taskbar;
(3) From there, Press ControlTab once, then tab twice to " Customize Start
Menu, Advanced ..." Press Enter;
(4) You are then presented with a TreeView. Press P for Programs, and
RightArrow to open it. Then press J for JAWS until you get to the version
for which you want to create the HotKey;
(5) When JAWS is highlighted, tab to ListView. Then arrow until you come
to item called '1 kB ShortCut';
(6) There, press AltEnter, and you'll get to a 'general Properties dialog'
similar to that which you met on the TaskBar. ControlTab once, then tab
twice and you will be prompted to assign a HotKey. By default, this will
be AltControlJ, but you can also use AltShift or ControlShiftJ, whichever
you prefer. If a HotKey has already been assigned to an earllier version
of JFW which is still installed, it is advisable to choose a different
HotKey;
(7) Once you've chosen and entered the Hotkey combo, close with AltF4 and
Escape from the TaskBar. Now try out your Keyboard shortcut that you
created, from anywhere in the system. Hope it works. Once Windows has
been loaded, your keyboard shortcut will load JFW and it will speak when
invoked.

On the contrary, I find it quite easy to attach a hotkey to a program. Here
Is how:
Open My Computer
Choose the drive your Windows folder is stored in
Open the windows folder
Open the start menu folder
Then programs
and finally jfw 32 or whatever your jfw folder is entitled
find the jaws entry and press alt-enter to get into the properties
Choose the shortcut tab
In the shortcut edit box press the hotkey you wish to use to launch jfw (in
My case alt+cntl+j)
Click the ok button and back out of the stuff you opened
To test, press insert+f4 to close jfw
When it shuts down, press the hotkey you assigned to the program
JFW should launch.

It is possible to set up a shortcut either in the start menu or the desktop
(it does not matter which) that allows you to use a key combination to start
JFW such as
control+alt+J. This is good for your example or if JFW dies on you for some
reason. Here is a way to set up a desktop icon that you can activate
without any recourse to sight.
1 In windows explorer go into the windows directory and then go into the
Desktop directory ie. c:\windows\desktop.
2 When there open the file menu and select "new" and enter the sub menu.
You should find an item called "shortcut" and select it.
3 You will be greeted by a dialogue containing an edit prompt called
"Command line" here you could type the exact path to your JFW program e.g.
c:\jfw32\jfw.exe (assuming you are using version 3.2 and you selected the
Default install location for JFW). Alternatively you could press tab to get
To the browse button and find JFW that way. Either way press enter to move

4 Hopefully if windows found the program you will be greeted by another
Prompt, which says "select a name for this shortcut" which could be anything

these instructions are for putting a short cut on the desktop, so one can
also use them for jfw.
when you go to win explorer go to the jfw32 folder
in stead of windows, and find jfw . exe file instead of scanregw . exe.
these to substitutions are all one need do to see an easier way to make a
desktop shortcut for jfw.
this method is limitted to win 98.
one can ignore any referance to scan reg.

especially if they also read scanreg and scanregw.

by the way this method used to put a short cut on the desk top is new in
win 98.
before installing additional software, i assume you already installed the
jfw program,
you need an easy way to back up the registry file,
in fact win 98 automatically runs scanregw on boot up thus making a backup
when the p c is turned on.
i repeat do not disable this in start up.
still if i want to install 2 software programs in one day i will need to
make a backup
of registry so i can roll back to a copy that is the same as the one before
it.
so before install real audio, i make registry back up, then later that day
after the real audio install
i make another backup of registry before installing word perfect.
so in one day we may need to make several backups of registry file,
depending on how much software one installes that day,
so a short cut is what we need to make it easy.
first we must set up a easy way to make such a copy,
read the instructions below for making short cut for backing up registry
file.
first we must launch win explorer.
here is how we do it.
hit win 98 start key
hit letter p for program
hit p c cursor
arrow up to windows explorer and hit enter
tab over to tree view
arrow down to windows
once on windows hit the tab key, it should say list box.
now beginn typeing in scanregw
note the spelling is scan reg w . exe
this should make windows 98 jump to the right spot, or spelling
route the jfw cursor and verify that you are on the correct file.
if not arrow to it.
then recheck with jfw cursor
their are similar named files.
like scan reg . ini
now lets assume you are on the executable file
[ by the way this method of putting a short cut on the desk top works for
all .exe files. in win 98]
shift key plus function key f 10 keystroke
this brings up the context menu.
now hit the p c cursor and arrow up to,
send to
hit enter on it, then arrow down to make short cut on desk top.
hit enter and presto now you have a short cut called scanregw on desk top.
now we shall move to the shortcut on desk top and rename it.
insert key on num lock plus function key f 6 keystroke
this will minimize all the applications, tab to desk top.
once on desk top arrow to the scan reg short cut.
now hit the f 2 function key
now hit backspace several times
now type in the following
registry back up
or what ever is appropriate name for the shortcut.
usually the blind user will want to rename it if for no other reason than
to get rid of the word shortcut.
tab over to o k and hit enter
congradulations, you just renamed it to something in the english language.
this method of renameing shortcuts works with most shortcuts.
we are still on the short cut, so here is how we add a hot key.
you may or may not want to add one.
Press alt+enter keystroke to get
At the shortcut property sheets.
this page is a multi page dialogue box, but for us we only need to change
the current page.
Press tab twice to get to "shortcut key" edit prompt and then hold down
The desired shortcut key .
control+ alt plus letter r keystroke
or control + shift plus letter r keystroke.
Control+alt combinations are good because they are rarely ever used in
application programs so you will not get a key conflict.
unless you happen to use one of the 11 m s word uses.
i think m s word also uses the control plus shift as well.
now tab to o k and hit enter.
the last part deals with running the application, if you have a short cut,
one can simple press
control plus alt plus letter r keystroke
if no hot key read on.
now minimize the screen with
insert key plus f
now hit letter r until it says registry backup, then hit enter
now it examines the registry file, though it never finds anything wrong.
when finished it prompts you to make a backup of registry file, click yes
if their are no errors.
I THINK THEN IT PROMPTS YOU TO HIT ENTER AGAIN.
