Yes, I have had this happen, also.
As a preventive measure, I try to empty the delete file every 2 or 300 posts before
it gets too large.

Hi Listers, Twice now I have had a crash as a direct result of deleting a
large block of messages from the deleted messages folder in O E 5.
Upon deleting the selected messages, the computer beeps at me and looses
speech. I am forced to restart at this point.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I invite your considered opinions on a fix for this.
