Hi Jed,
Hopefully this will help alleviate your Zip problems.
First, if you are running a parallel or SCSI Zip drive -- make sure ALL the
drivers are updated and installed correctly. If so, with these kinds of Zips
it should cure your problem. One other item -- you MUST use the cables that
came with the drive. I know that a parallel cable will fit just nicely, but
its not a Zip cable. Same goes for the SCSI cables, you can't use a generic
one.
Second, if you are running an internal Zip, you must make sure that Windows
sees that drive as a hard (removable) drive. Look in Device Manager and see
if you have 2 things:
1) A listing for a SCSI Controller device that describes the parameters of
your ZIP.
2) A listing under Disk Drives for an "IOMEGA ZIP" drive.
If the above 2 items are not met, then windows doesn't see your Zip and
therefore you can't move or copy files between it and any hard drives.
First, have a sighted person check your CMOS to see if you have your 2 hard
drives named as Master (Drive 0) this is your C drive and Slave (Drive 1)
this is your D drive on the primary ribbon cable/channel. If you have a
CDROM put it on the secondary ribbon cable/channel as the Slave Drive on the
Secondary channel. Now, this leaves the Master Drive slot open on the
secondary ribbon cable/channel -- this is where you need to plug your Zip
into. Remember to have a sighted person move the jumpers on the CDROM to the
"Slave" position. You do not need to name your Zip in the CMOS -- that's
what its software is for. Once you have completed the instructions in this
paragraph, reboot and go into Windows.
When Windows loads, it will see that you have a Zip drive and try to install
it with Windows drivers. Let it go all the way in to the desktop. Now,
install your Zip drivers (download the latest ones from www.Iomega.com).
Once installed you must format and mount each new disk you put into that
drive, as they come formatted in 2 formats (PCMAC and PCDOS). This "double
format" so to speak may cause glitches. Just remember to format each new
disk before its first use.
Hope this helps as I ran in circles with the 2 Zips I have running on my
machine.
