Jed, yes, it is a feature you can adjust.  I still encourage you to
try it the way it is and use the backspace key to move up levels.  but
if you really want it the other way, open MyComputer and from the View
menu choose Folder Options.

Under the general tab, make sure the custom radio button is checked
then tab to the custom settings button and hit enter.

Tab through the controls until you get to the one about browsing
options.  It's a radio button where you can choose whether to open
each folder in the same window or in a new window.  Set this as you
desire and OK the 2 dialogs.  I hope this answers your question.
