It sounds like you have the screen toggle command insert+s in a position
that reads all.  Just hold down the insert key and press the letter s until
you hear none, all or highlighted.
Choose the one you desire.
If it is set to all, it will read all the screen with each keystroke.

If you sound each keystroke you make, then your keyboard echo is set to
characters.  This function toggles among none, characters and words.  The
command for this feature is insert+2.  The 2 is the numbers row 2, not the
numpad.
