Hi,
The INSERT+ENTER keystroke, by default, moves the virtual cursor to the next
chunk of text of 50 characters or more that is not interrupted by any links.
Its purpose, of course, is to avoid the long lists of links at the beginning
of many web pages and bring the user to the information they actually might
find interesting. On many of the sites we tested, the 50 character
threshold worked very nicely but, apparently, it is too long for the CNN
pages.
If you are the sort of person who doesn't mind manually changing JAWS
Configuration Files, you can go into the default.jcf file (using Notepad or
some other editor) and search for the line that reads, "TextBlockLength=50"
(leaving out the quotes). You can then change this value to something that
better meets your needs. Lately, I have kept the setting on my personal
machine at around 30 and it seems to work very well on my favorite sites.
Before you edit default.jcf, you might want to make a copy of it so you can
easily return JFW to the original settings.
If you set the value too low, you will get a lot of false hits and land in
the middle of a pile of links. Conversely, if the value is set too high,
you will miss some of the articles you are hoping to read. A bit of trial
and error might be required to find the value that is best for your needs.
The next version of JFW will have a place in the configuration manager that
will contain this value so you won't need to edit the .jcf directly.
Thanks,
cdh
