Dear friends,
The recent incident of last month at Gawahati on the adivasi
youths has brought to the notice the plight Jharkhandi adivasi in the North
East. Majority of the adivasi population are from the tea gardens and are at
present in a miserable condition due to the closer of most of the tea gardens.
On the other hand they are known as tea tribe and do not get the Scheduled
tribe benefit .The tragedy is that people who migrated to Fiji and Morisus
during the same time has become head of that country but here the adivasi did
not get reservation in the neighboring state .within their country.
On the above subject we had made a film “KORA RAJEE’ (Land of
the diggers) in 2004. The film was awarded Silver Conch in MIFF 2006.
Friends who want to see the film or want to do screening of the
film in their place to show solidarity with the cause ,can ask for copies from
us.
                                                                        A short
synopsis of the film is given below .

Synopsis
KORA RAJEE
(land of the diggers)
.
When we take a sip from our cup of tea do we try to realize that
80% of labour in it is of adivasi.. For last 150 years adivasi labors have been
taken in the tea gardens of North Bengal and Assam, which they called “ Kora
Rajee” meaning land of the diggers .Today they are more then 5 million in the
north east .

The film also tries to deal with the present crisis of mass scale
closure of tea gardens, school and health centers, even the supply of water
from the taps is stopped. Unemployment, and the hunger death due to it, what is
the role of globalization in this context

. AKHRA has made this film on the History of indigenous (Adivasi)
labours in the tea gardens. It is also a personal journey of
the Director (Biju Toppo) who tries to find out how his ancestors went to the
tea gardens, and what is the present situation.
