Thanks Santhaa Reddy for this thought provoking article. Till now I was also unaware of the actual background of the Devadasi. I was also under the impression that they are the prostitutes meant to serve the priests and other rulers. For the first time I learnt that they were the women who had saved dance and musical traditions. I even heard that the great singers and dancers of south india, some of whom were successful in films, had come from the Devadasi tradition. Thank again Reddy Ji,
