A prominent women’s college in the Steel City is all set to find a perfect
match for its students, the only condition being the girls have to complete
their graduation.

The Jamshedpur Women’s College is in the process of opening a centre christened
Swayambar to help the students find their life partners.

A brainchild of the college’s principal Shukla Mohanty, Swayambar is being
pursued by her colleagues in the sociology department.

Swayambar will act as a facilitator to get the girls established in life
without dowry, Mohanty said. “When we are taking responsibility to provide
education to the students, there is no reason why we should not find suitable
grooms for them as well,” she said, adding that the condition to finish
graduation would act as a spur for the parents to get their daughters educated.

“We are expecting it to start functioning from next session (June-July) as we
are waiting for the approval of the academic council which is likely to meet at
end-March,” she said.

Mohanty said Swayambar would also find suitable matches for widows and
divorcees if they wanted to complete graduation.

The choice and wish of a girl would be taken into consideration while looking
for a groom, she said, adding she would not prefer any inter-caste or
inter-religion marriage unless the parents of both parties agreed to the
proposal.

Ruling out the possibility of tie-ups with any marriage bureaus, Mohanty said
the centre, however, might go for an arrangement with IITs and IIMs in a bid to
find a good match.
A plan is also on the anvil to create a website displaying candidates’ profiles
and horoscope. Mohanty said the candidates may be required to pay a nominal
registration fee.
