Tribal rights rally turns violent in India; 6 dead, more than 130 injured

GAUHATI, India - A rally to demand ethnic tribal rights in northeastern
India escalated into violence between protesters and residents Saturday,
leaving at least six dead and more than 130 injured, officials said.

About 6,000 tea plantation workers from the Adivasi ethnic group marched
through Gauhati, the capital of Assam state, to demand the government
recognize them as a separate tribal group, said C.K. Bhuyan, a magistrate.
Adivasis make up the majority of workers on tea plantations in Assam.

Some of the marchers pelted shops and vehicles with stones, sparking a
similar response from ethnic Assamese residents, area resident Mausam Bora
told The Associated Press.

Bora said police opened fire on the crowd to quell the violence.

Six people were killed in the fighting, said Rajen Singh, a local police
official.

The government imposed a curfew in parts of the city, Bhuyan said, adding
that 130 injured people were hospitalized.

Both officials declined to comment on whether police officers had fired any
shots.

There are more than 800 tea estates in Assam which produce almost half of
India's nearly one million tonnes of tea a year.
