   One problem with testing kafka brokers that are 5+ years old is that it will 
become increasingly difficult to run a JDK and version of ZooKeeper that they 
support.
   
   For example, openjdk 8 is going EOL in 2026. Any security vulnerabilities in 
it after that point won't be fixed, and probably it will start getting hard to 
even download using apt-get or similar mechanisms. The versions of ZooKeeper 
that Kafka 2.x require are already impossible to download from 
zookeeper.apache.org, although they can be found from other sources. And of 
course they do have CVEs that will never be fixed. You cannot just swap in 
newer ZK jars, or a newer JDK, because it's incompatible (both at the client 
and serrver levels).
   
   Compatibility is good, but at some point it starts being retrocomputing...
