I don't think I've ever used ssh on any of our home machines (though I
do have cygwin on the server). No idea how to ssh into the controller,
but I guess I could find out if I really needed. Feels a bit
long-winded and half-baked!

Sounds promising, if only I could get it to appear...
... but this entry in the SqeezeCenter logfile appears whenever I
navigate into the Applet Installer menu:
Code:
--------------------
[08-04-30 01:59:27.2909] Slim::Control::Request::execute (1757) Error: While
trying to run function coderef [Slim::Control::Jive::downloadQuery]: [Can't
call method "getString" on an undefined value at
/<C:\PROGRA~1\SQUEEZ~1\server\SQUEEZ~1.EXE>Slim/Control/Jive.pm line 2022.
]
--------------------
which looks like a null reference has crept in.
Incidentally, the SC log is occasionally peppered with lines of the
form:
Code:
--------------------
[08-04-30 01:56:34.5331]
Slim::Networking::SqueezeNetwork::PrefSync::_syncDown_error (354) Sync Down
failed: No such player: (ADDRESS), will retry in 7169928
--------------------
where (ADDRESS) is the MAC address of my SB3. Could it be something to
do with key renewal on the wireless network? I hardly ever use
SqueezeNetwork (got too much music of my own that I never listen
to...)
