Thanks, gcurrie. Now that's weird. I have tested again yesterday, and the 7.5 build on my Ubuntu karmic box synchronizes perfectly (!) with my Squeezebox Radio. All in all it seems to work as it should (apart from the wrinkle that it only runs as root atm).
This hence seems to suggest that it is only broken for certain architectures/audio interfaces?
