I don't think this is about replacing fonts it's about adding an
additional font for an additional skin. People still wants to be able
to use the standard font when they use the standard skun.
I'm guessing the FreeSans font is specified in some lua file, should be
possible to find by using grep or similar search tools. Hopefully you
can change the font name used from inside your skin applet.
TTF fonts should work, at least they do in my Custom Clock applet.
