Hmm, not sure what happened to chrisadam2's post, but anyway installing from the repositories proved to be a bad idea. The versions in the repositories caused all sorts of problems with gnome.
So before I start again I want to make sure I'm installing correctly and version that apparently works on Ubuntu 10.04.
