Because spaces in these fields are not completely obvious in the configuration dialogs. For example, it is not clear if there is one space, or perhaps two spaces, and in the situation that I had, I did not notice the space at all until I copied the field and pasted into a fixed font text editor. I would think that if spaces are desired as part of a variable or property name, the author would be required to put the field in quotes.
