Well, the Jogl page states

t is now possible to deploy unsigned applets using JOGL with no
manual installation of any software on the end user's machine!

Obviously, the issue is whether the receiving computer uses an
OpenGL compatible video card and driver. I know that
both Linux and Win XP can make use of eg the NVidia
Quadro series, and I am pretty sure Mac OS X can as well.
Thus https://jogl-demos.dev.java.net/applettest.html
seems to work fine for me (using GeForce 6800GT card)

I presume, since its a hardware mapping, that performance is
not going to take a hit, but I bow to programmers to tell me
that for sure.
