I've tested my ideas on http://biomodel.uah.es/angel/Jmol/rounded/
1. uses just CSS (good only for Firefox, Chrome and Safari, but I guess you already have your solutions for rounded corners) 2. Jmol can position 4 images using "echo", but seems to have problems with GIF transparency in 3 out of 4 corner images.
