Using the WebGL option of JSO, the "color" parameter set in "Info" is 
ignored. HTML5 or Java modes work fine.

I get a white background no matter what color I specify.

Seems to be forcing transparent background, not white, since
  Info.script: 'background yellow'
has no effect either.

Oh, yes, it is transparent indeed: takes the page bkgcolor.

I'm not saying this is too bad, but it changes the behaviour with respect to 
the 
alternative applet surrogates.

I'm using a jsmol-zip downloaded on 21 Dec 2012
 its readme.txt says
revision 6:48 AM 12/7/2012
