I think it was Miguel who mentioned using a signed applet in lieu of a
plug-in. this seems a simpler and more robust solution, but maybe I
don't understand the problem correctly. why wouldn't a signed applet
work here?

Hi guys,

Tim, I must admit that I am confused by Miguel's suggestion. I am looking for a way to train Safari (or even another MacOS X browser!), upon loading a MOL file into the browser, to find Jmol (preferable the applet, but if not then the stand-alone app) on the local disk and then launch it to render the MOL file. But from what I read on the Web, both regular applets and signed applets are delivered to the browser from the external server that is also delivering the page. The servers I am accessing are delivering MOL files without *any* applet, so a signed applet won't solve the problem for me.

From Henry's mail (hi Henry, nice to meet you, I've come across your name in the literature before), I gather that there is no way in Safari to tell it to deliver files with certain extensions to applications of the user's choosing, as there was in Netscape 4.7. And the fact that Jmol is a Java program means that the .jar file is not recognized as an application even by Netscape 7, which means that it can't be designated as a helper application. I suppose this solution will have to wait until Safari 1.3 or later. At least Safari now has LiveConnect!

So it looks like we're back to the plug-in idea. Miguel, you said that developing a plug-in is a major undertaking -- and maybe it is. I know I'm not now capable of writing one, nor am I willing to put in the time to learn how to do it and then do it. But we have lots of talented computer science graduate students here, all looking for challenging master's projects. Lots of free labor! I'll ask around. (Now if only we could get someone to fund the student for a semester or two....)

By the way, MDL confirms that they won't release the source code for Chime, even on a confidential basis. I don't understand why not; it's no good to them anymore. But it's their property to do with what they will, I suppose.
