I agree. I encourage you to file a bug report with the Firefox team. My own extensive testing of firefox on Win32, OS X, and Linux has not revealed any problems. But you are the second person from the uk who has reported problems with loading the applet in Firefox. Any data that you could give me regarding your configuration (including the quality of your network connection) would be useful.
