Your example pages works Ok.
I found the problem following your other tip: fixing both (Java) variables in
the function so that they become Javascript variables has solved the
problem:
function messageProcess(a_,b_)
{ var a = (""+a_).substring("jmolApplet".length)
var b = ""+b_
etc
Particularly, it was "b" causing the problem
