Jmol default colors for chains are historical, but -yes- too pastel 
for my taste. Particularly the bluish and greenish, you don't need to 
be color-blind. 
Changing defaults is always a concern, but I agree that there might 
be a point in this. Or at least not change default but have other 
choice to apply a different scheme/palette. I would have a use for 
that.

Sorry, I don't know if this is technically possible or easy to do; it 
should be possible, since the color schemes are defined in the 
JmolConstants.java file

I might give it a try. Maybe just having an "alternate color scheme", 
say

 color chainNew

 (I for sure don't know how to implement a full user-definable 
scheme)

RasMol had a classic "color cpk" and they implemented "color cpkNew" -
- this gives me the idea
