Dear Bob,

Thanks for the comprehensive summary on the state of Jmol applet and
JSmol.

First of all, a huge thanks for the tremendous effort you have put in such a
short time and the extraordinary product you have achieved to make. We all
owe you much.

A few notes of my own to share with users:

* JSmol has problems to run from local disk --in contrast to Jmol applet. You
can find trouble during initialization if you are not using it from a web
server.
A local web server is fine. Users must be aware of this -- you cannot run
around with your laptop and show colleagues your stuff when you don't have
internet connection or a precise setup in your laptop.
I have been unable to narrow down what is that fails in loading of the JS
libraries from local disk. It seems also to depend on the particular browser.

* With Internet Explorer, JSmol-HTML5 is only functional with very recent
versions (9 is OK, 8 likely too) and the speed of rendering, rotation, etc. may
still be poor (that seems to depend on MS implementation of javascript in
their browser).

* The world of iPad and other tablets and phones is now open to JSmol, and
that is great news. There are yet concerns about the responsiveness of the
models in JSmol. This will need experimentation to find out.

The good news is that even though JSmol is still slower, it is likely that it
will
improve as browsers are updated. HTML5 is the right track to follow.

* I have already set translation of some of my pages, which use ellaborate
contents and Jmol scripts, and which now run Java-less. I still need to
integrate them properly in my website structure, but for now you are welcome
to check them out at

(feedback is welcome on performance in different platforms)

* And more on capturing a snapshot from JSmol as an image goes in a
separate message.

Long life Jmol!
