Ah, that is the biggest issue.
Running Java applets from local disk is getting more and more difficult 
--even impossible.
Either you use signed applet or you install a local webserver and see the 
pages from that (it depends on the software you choose to install, but it's  
something like localhost/yourpage.htm or http://127.0.0.1/yourpage.htm).
Local server is what I've been forced to use lately. A shame.

Make sure to read

although things now are worse than that (more restrictive), it will give you 
some hints.
